The soundscape is inspired from the day to day operations of the oil and gas industry. These sonic occurrences are often largely ignored, they blur into the background ambiance of labour and production. These sounds are largely from modern industrialism (post 1960), rather than Victorian industrialism (19th century). Therefore, we chronologically bypass the concept of steampunk, and move swiftly onto oilpunk.
Industrial Soundbeds by Psuedo_PatterThere is a mixture between real-life recordings and synthesised sounds. The recordings were made using primarily two methods: for short samples, a Sennheiser K6 & ME66 shot-gun microphone was used for its clarity and fine ability to pick out sounds in noisy environments. This was used with a Zoom H4n recorder for travel abilities. All mixed in Pro Tools 8. For longer samples (ie textures and soundbeds) a stereo mic setup was preferred to give a balanced stereo image and the ability to send the sound around the system. This was mainly using two Neumann KM 184s because of there warmth and the cardioid pattern made them durable in loud situations (such as recording drilling).

The synth-beds were created using Ableton 8 suite and a Novation Remote controller. The aim was to make beds that would complement and enhance the industrial atmosphere. However, it was important to keep it in key, so each synthesiser kept to three chords starting at middle E.
